Neuse River Trail

Last week, on a cold and cloudy day, I visited the Neuse River Greenway Trail in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The parking lot is in the middle of a large construction area, so it was a little hectic. Instead of running out to explore nature, I found myself reading people to gauge if the place was safe. I live far away from the city, so the urban atmosphere seemed tense.

The paved trail was well-kept. I saw several squirrels, bluebirds, and cardinals. There was also a large hawk perched high in the trees. And those trees. Wow. I see tall pines every day, but the trees in this area were enormous and easily dwarfed the 70-foot eastern white pines I'm accustomed to seeing.

The sun sets early this time of year, and a wintry day made the dark fall sooner than expected. This visit reminded me of how beautiful this state is and how drawn I feel to nature. I want to revisit this location when I have more time, as they have over 38 miles of trails. All in all, it was a great experience.
